India was originally birtish too, but they don’t sound birtish. So was most of Africa, but they don’t sound birtish. Canada was originally birtish, but they don’t sound birtish. See what I mean? It’s all about regional dialects and how language differs where it is spoken. While it is true that those places were under birtish control politically, each colony and dominion had its own way of speaking and their languages were influenced by where they were and their cultures. English is a very flexible language and it is different and unique almost everywhere it is spoken. Someone from New Orleans will have a very different accent and collection of slang than someone from Boston or New York City. Each language develops from where it is spoken. American English developed that way because that was how the people of that time chose to speak it.
